This drum is from Zambia. More specifically from the Valley Tonga, a valley that runs between Zimbabwe and Zambia. These drums are used for funeral ceremonies. They have a goblet shape. This is a very old drum from mid 20th Century. This drum has the original hide on the stem to add extra support.
This drum was owned by Frank Gauden of African Artifacts, a specialist drum manufacturer in Gauteng. He was an avid collector of rare drums and beads. The drum was bought from Frank by the Warren lieberman in 2004. Frank owned these drums for at least 30 years and regarded them as the best examples of Tonga Drums.
It is a very large and rare drum and is considered a Mother Drum of Budima drums
This is a very beautiful and well preserved drum.
