Tonga Drum – no head

Tonga Drum from Zimbabwe Zambia border. These drums are played during rituals and ceremonies by the Batonga tribe. This drum was purchased by Maurice Fresco in 1985 from Norma Chikawore, a well known Zimbabwean drum expert. Norma would travel around Zimbabwe and Zambia, collecting the finest drums from villages, and bring them to South to sell to select clients.

African Tonga drum played by the Batonga. It is a large drum – beautiful design, but has lost its cow skin head.

The wood is heavy. Either Mahogany or Teak. This drum is easily over 70 years old.
