Batonga Budima Mother Drum

This drum is from Zambia. More specifically from the Valley Tonga, a valley that runs between Zimbabwe and Zambia. These drums are used for funeral ceremonies. They have a goblet shape. This is a very old drum from mid 20th Century. This drum has the original hide on the stem to add extra support.

This drum was owned by Frank Gauden of African Artifacts, a specialist drum manufacturer in Gauteng. He was an avid collector of rare drums and beads.

It is a very large and rare drum and is considered a Mother Drum of Budima drums

This drum has 2 pieces of cord wrapped around the body for extra strength.
